Spanish theatrics starting to overshadow the football

April 5, 2013 in Europe, La Liga

It has long been the case that us English have always been great admirers of Spanish philosophy. The beauty of their football, the elegance of their players and the dignity and modesty with which they play the game. It would be a grave shame, therefore, if the unsavory theatrics and hounding of referees forced football fans to quench their football thirst elsewhere. Certainly on the back of both Barcelona and Real Madrid’s last 16 Champions League ties, that looks as if it isn’t too far away from happening.

Never before has my disappointment at a negative Barcelona result been greeted with such animosity. Blaise Matuidi’s last minute leveller in Paris was greeted with a despondent sigh by myself, but a snigger of content from an anti-Catalan opposite. The future looks red for David Moyes and his modest ways

January 7, 2013 in Premier League

Predicting the future can be a dangerous business, particularly in football. One can be left nursing a serious case of ‘egg on face’. A Drop of Claret and Blue: West Ham’s December review

December 31, 2012 in Features

Welcome to A Drop of Claret and Blue. Let’s have a look back at December, shall we?

The month started very promisingly indeed. Having just lost to Spurs and Manchester United, I didn’t hold much hope of us getting anything at home to Chelsea, who were still reeling from the departure of manager Roberto di Matteo, with the fans overwhelmingly frustrated at the appointment of former Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez. Even still, this unrest failed to provide me with much optimism, and when we went a goal down in a first half that Chelsea largely dominated, I was far from surprised. What happened next, however, stunned me almost into paralysis. An exaggeration, I’m sure you’ll note; but even now, typing about that second half, I can hardly believe the words my fingers are forming.
